PATAGONIA DONATES $150,000 TO PUNTA DE LOBOS THROUGH ITS PERSONAL SURF INFLATION VEST PATENT PROGRAM

Patagonia’s President and CEO Rose Marcario Responds to Secretary Zinke’s 45-Day Interim Report on Bears Ears National Monument

Despite months of rhetoric claiming his respect for Teddy Roosevelt's legacy of public lands protection, Secretary Zinke revealed he is just another politician looking to exploit and develop America’s public lands at the expense of our children and grandchildren. Secretary Zinke’s recommendation that the president shrink the boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument ignores the law and public outcry, including over one million comments in support of monument status. Bears Ears holds irreplaceable cultural, ecological and recreational value and it needs our protection. If the president decides to usurp Congress’s authority and shrink the boundaries on his own, Patagonia will take legal action to defend our public lands. We hope everyone who cares about public lands will continue to let their voices be heard.  – Rose Marcario, President and CEO, Patagonia

ROSE MARCARIO STATEMENT ON TRUMP NATIONAL MONUMENTS EXECUTIVE ORDER

Less than 24 hours after joining with our industry to celebrate the economic power of outdoor recreation, in a hypocritical move, the Trump administration took unprecedented steps that could result in the removal of protections for treasured public lands. We take this as a sign that Trump and his team prefer to cater to fossil fuel interests and state land grabs for unsustainable development, rather than preserve a vital part of our nation’s heritage for future generations by protecting federal lands owned by every citizen.

STATEMENT IN DEFENSE OF BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT FROM ROSE MARCARIO, PRESIDENT AND CEO, PATAGONIA, INC.

The Trump administration’s unprecedented reversal of protections for Bears Ears National Monument is an egregious violation of our shared American values. It is an affront to all of us who enjoy and benefit from the preservation of our nation’s most treasured publicly owned landscapes, and to the Native American communities for whom the land is sacred.

Moreover, it’s unlawful.  A U.S. president has no authority to remove national monument protection under the Antiquities Act and that is why we, along with our conservation partners, are suing to challenge the President’s authority under the Antiquities Act to remove Bears Ears’ national monument protections.

THIS IS BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT

Patagonia’s most recent initiative to protect Bears Ears National Monument is a collection of interactive 360-degree films highlighting the cultural and recreational significance of the threatened region in Southeastern Utah. In This is Bears Ears National Monument, powered by Google’s 360 technology, Patagonia’s ten short films create an experience of total immersion through the storytelling of Native American tribal leaders and outdoor athletes. The film experience concludes with a call-to-action to Secretary Zinke, asking him to stand up for public lands and defend Bears Ears National Monument.

THE NEW PATAGONIA DOWN SLEEPING BAG—45 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Patagonia’s new 850 Down Sleeping Bag is inspired by the bag Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard built for himself 45 years ago—a simple mummy-style bag with overstuffed channels and a center-front zipper that let him tie in at belays, cook at bivies, move around without the bag twisting and have consistent loft, trip after trip. Inspired, Patagonia set out to create its first sleeping bag, an updated version of Yvon’s innovative bag. The new 850 Down Sleeping Bag is an elegant, real-world bag built with the best available materials and 45 years of down-construction expertise.

PATAGONIA TO WITHDRAW FROM OUTDOOR RETAILER IN RESPONSE TO GOV. HERBERT’S DECISION TO RESCIND BEARS EARS PROTECTION

“Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed a resolution on Friday urging the Trump administration to rescind the Bears Ears National Monument, making it clear that he and other Utah elected officials do not support public lands conservation nor do they value the economic benefits - $12 billion in consumer spending and 122,000 jobs – that the outdoor recreation industry brings to their state. Because of the hostile environment they have created and their blatant disregard for Bears Ears National Monument and other public lands, the backbone of our business, Patagonia will no longer attend the Outdoor Retailer show in Utah and we are confident other outdoor manufacturers and retailers will join us in moving our investment to a state that values our industry and promotes public lands conservation.“ – Rose Marcario, President and CEO, Patagonia, Inc.

THE OUTDOOR INDUSTRY LOVES UTAH; DOES UTAH LOVE THE OUTDOOR INDUSTRY?

Every year, millions of people visit public lands in Utah to climb, hike, ski, hunt and a heck of a lot more. I’ve skied, climbed and fished the wild streams of wild Utah for years. The American people own these lands – and Utah reaps the rewards. Every year, outdoor recreation in Utah drives $12 million in consumer spending and supports 122,000 jobs across the state.  Sure, we use these lands for energy and grazing and other things too. But access to the outdoors is the reason why so many of my friends consider Utah the ultimate place to live
