VENTURA, Calif. — After an incredible mobilization, Patagonia announced today it successfully reached the goal of the 11.2 Million Vote Project: The company’s customers and community motivated hundreds of thousands of their friends and family to create individualized plans to vote in this year’s U.S. midterm election.
The outdoor apparel company launched the 11.2 Million Vote Project on Saturday, Sept. 26. By Wednesday, Sept. 30, more than 112,000 people signed up and sent links to at least three friends or family members to encourage them to vote in the November 3 midterms. In total, nearly 500,000 people now have plans to vote.
A plan to vote identifies relevant deadlines and voting locations to remove the guesswork for voters. Each voter can choose whether to vote early, vote in-person or vote by mail, based on the rules where they live.
Patagonia committed $11.2 million for the project, which gave participants who reached out to at least three people they know a choice between $100 in credit for Patagonia products or a $100 donation from Patagonia to the League of Conservation Voters. The project’s name is a nod to research from the Environmental Voter Project, which found 11.2 million registered-to-vote environmentalists did not vote in the 2024 election.
“We’re excited and quite frankly shocked at how quickly our community responded to our midterms initiative,” said Patagonia chief communications and impact officer Corley Kenna. “Our community understands the connection between a healthy democracy and a healthy planet, and in just four days, they helped almost half a million people make a plan to vote.”
The 11.2 Million Vote Project is nonpartisan and open to U.S. citizens and green card holders without regard to party affiliation, voting intention or location. Although Patagonia has now spent the $11.2 million, it will keep the voter plan creation tool online, and the company will continue to encourage its community to vote and volunteer with partners at Environmental Voter Project and League of Conservation Voters through Election Day.
Patagonia has been encouraging the community to vote with the environment in mind since 1978, when it first placed an advertisement in a local Ventura newspaper to get out the vote. The company has offered time and resources to employees and customers to vote the environment since 2004, and it has closed its U.S. offices, stores and warehouse for every federal election since 2016. In 2018, Patagonia co-founded Time to Vote, a nonpartisan business-led movement to ensure workers don’t have to choose between earning a paycheck and voting. Time to Vote now includes more than 2,000 companies.
